The Reading of the Word

If you’ve never read the entire Bible, the beginning of a new year is a great time to start. Beginning today, I’m reading through the Bible in a year following Robert Murray M’Cheyne’s plan. M’Cheyne was a Scottish pastor who had a passion for getting his people into the word of God.

I’ve done this plan before, and coupled with D.A. Carson’s For the Love of God, (which has brief but insightful daily commentaries on each day’s readings) the plan is very manageable even for those with the busiest of schedules. It takes only 15 minutes of reading per day, and you will read the entire Old Testament once and the New Testament and Psalms twice during the year. The readings can be found on the internet here.

If indeed the Bible is the word of God—and I do believe that it is, then it follows that reading it is one of the most important things we can do. So, whether or not you decide to read the whole Bible in a year, my prayer is that you will begin to hear from God by reading at least some of the Bible this year.
