Where Sea Meets Sand…

…is where I’ll be for the next few days. Time to read some books, kick back and catch some rays. Not too many rays, of course—it’s SPF 48 all the way for me this time. My last burning taught me a valuable lesson: God made me white in race, and I need not aspire to … Read more

Summer Reading

I know summer is officially a month away, but in order to get the amount of reading I have planned completed (I never actually do), I thought I would get a head start. So, here’s what’s on the shelf… Currently opened and past the first chapter are Jackson Lears’ Something for Nothing: Luck in America, … Read more

A Run to Remember

I’ve started running again this week and amidst the soreness (I hadn’t laced up my running shoes in about a year) I am reminded that it was 50 years ago this month that a 25-year-old medical student named Roger Bannister became the first person to run a mile in under 4 minutes. My personal record … Read more

Cold Blooded Hiking

As I was hiking this weekend, I came upon this little critter on the trail. He appears to be a ringed snake, or diadophis punctatus. He was a little slow moving, so I imagine he was either just emerging from hibernation, or had recently eaten. I’m glad I helped him off the trail with a … Read more

Waiting in the ICU

Lori and I went to Tennessee over the weekend to see my grandmother (see below). She is slowly recovering from the surgery, but is still in critical condition. Please keep her in your prayers. We spent a few hours in the ICU waiting room, and I had forgotten what it was like to sit in … Read more

Request Update

Thanks to those of you who prayed for my grandmother over the last few days. The latest reports from Tennessee say that she is doing remarkably well in her recovery (she is still in intensive care). We’re driving down this weekend to check in on her. Once again, thanks for your continued prayers.

Request

On a personal note, I’d like to ask all who are willing to pray for my maternal grandmother, 76, who just underwent emergency brain surgery to correct a hematoma. She’s in pretty bad condition, but she did make it through the surgery. The next 24 hours are critical, and she’s under close observation in an … Read more

Show your colors

In case anyone was wondering what I’ve been doing at work, here it is: The George W. Bush Online Store. I’ve been working on updating the design–we also have many new products for those of you who like to show your colors. This is about as close to an advertising pitch as you’ll get on … Read more

The Praise of Food

Desiderius Erasmus wrote The Praise of Folly, but being in a nonsensical, and hungry (in that late-night sort of way) mood, I’ve decided to switch the gears of this blog a little and write about a couple of my favorite restaurants. The first I will mention is the Italian Village in my home town of … Read more

Johnny Estes, R.I.P.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; … Read more
